How does it work?
How does spectroscopic bioimpedancemetry work?
You settle in. Four electrodes are placed on your skin. In less than ten seconds, the device measures what's happening inside your body.
But how does VitaScan technology, based on spectroscopic bioimpedance measurement (BIS), work?
What is spectroscopic bioimpedancemetry (BIS)?
A measurement based on body electricity
The body contains water, muscle, fat and minerals. But each of these tissues and elements conducts electricity differently. Water and muscle conduct electricity well, while adipose tissue (fat) tends to slow it down.
This is the basic principle on which bio-impedancemetry is based.
What happens in practice?
During the check-up, electrodes are used to pass a very low-intensity electric current through the body. Don't panic: this current is so weak that it is totally painless and imperceptible.
The objective? To measure the overall resistance (or impedance) of the electric current flowing through the tissues by collecting two parameters:
Resistance (R): linked to the water content of the fabric.
Reactance (Xc): linked to the state of cell membranes, reflecting cellular vitality.
It's these differences in resistance that enable VitaScan to analyze your body structure (fat/lean mass/bone mineral density), hydration levels and overall vitality.
Why does spectroscopy make measurement more precise?
Consumer impedance scales generally use a single electrical frequency (often 50 kHz) and a single current path (foot-to-foot).
As a result, they only measure an overall trend, often influenced by surface hydration, with no distinction between body compartments.
In contrast, the use of spectroscopic BIS enables the use of a frequency spectrum and multi-point segmental measurement (hands/tangles), with more accurate results.
Thanks to this non-deductive approach, water volumes, active cell mass and lean mass are obtained by direct modeling from measured data, and not extrapolated via statistical equations as with conventional scales.
Spectroscopic BIS provides precision medical analysisindependent of age, sex or ethnic origin, whereas consumer devices only give an average estimate based on generic formulas.
Advantages over conventional measurement
More reliable and precise measurements
We can detect dehydration or water retention more accurately.
Better monitoring of your muscle mass
You can adapt your activity or diet accordingly.
Fewer outside influences
For example, drinking a glass of water before the check-up will be less disruptive to your hydration results.
Versatile use
Applicable in clinical, nutritional and sports contexts
A safe, risk-free method
Spectroscopic bio-impedancemetry is safe for authorized practitioners. No radiation, no needles, no known side effects at the frequencies used. It has been used for many years in hospitals, research laboratories and even for monitoring top athletes.
A safe method. Reliable. Validated by clinical studies.
